SARCAN Recycling provides environmental protection, employment creation and economic development through a province-wide network for recycling beverage containers, electronics, paint, batteries and select household packaging. We were founded in 1988 by SARC, a provincial association that provides services to nonprofit organizations to expand their potential and support the work they do in their communities.

This role will integrate sustainability considerations into SARC’s operations and decision-making processes. This position reports to the Associate Director of Strategy, Sustainability, and Culture.

The life of a SARCAN ESG Coordinator:
Each and every SARCAN team member is an important part of our team and our community.  As SARCAN’s ESG Coordinator, you will be responsible for:
  • Data Management and Reporting: collect, organize, and analyze ESG-related data; lead the creation of SARC’s ESG Report and annual Environmental Sustainability Report; prepare ESG statistics and supporting information for annual report, member updates, and government reports; develop a framework for tracking the environmental performance of SARC’s owned and rented facilities
  • Process Improvement and Strategic Growth: work with the organization to set corporate ESG goals and track performance against these goals; develop initiatives to improve SARC’s ESG-related processes
  • Social Impact Calculator: responsible for updating SARCAN Recycling’s social impact calculator; work with this digital tool to quantify the broader economic, social, and environmental benefits of SARCAN’s recycling operations
  • Procurement and Asset Management: ensure the organization leverages purchasing power to make sustainable purchasing decisions; create inventory of purchased materials and analyze through a social procurement assessment; work with purchasing teams to develop and put into practice social procurement standards
  • Research and Development: design and conduct research studies as required
  • Training, Awareness, and Education: enhancing our organizational knowledge and the knowledge of our stakeholders as it pertains to our environmental, social, and governance performance; raise internal awareness of ESG initiatives; be a subject matter expert in sustainability training; work with communications team to provide writing and develop content for public education and awareness initiatives
What are the skills you must have to perform this role?
To be successful as an ESG Coordinator at SARCAN, you will need:
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in environmental science, sustainability studies, business administration, finance/economics is an asset. A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
  • Skills in the areas of statistical analysis, report preparation, and market research, including strong analytical and data management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in project management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, and effective organizational skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Knowledge of ESG frameworks and leading reporting standards and practices.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Experience researching and understanding government policy (including legislation).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft 365; comfortable learning new technical systems as needed.
  • Exhibits a strong degree of professionalism, while remaining highly-personable and approachable in the company of people of all abilities, cultures, and backgrounds. 
  • Must provide a satisfactory criminal record check as a condition of employment.
